Plain answers to the questions caregivers ask us most. Don't see yours? Reach out — a real person will get back to you.
Respite means a short, planned break for the caregiver. Your loved one takes part in engaging, supervised, non-medical activities while you take time to rest, run errands, or simply breathe. Respite is not a sign of giving up — it's one of the most important ways to keep caregiving sustainable.
Yes. If you regularly help someone with memory loss manage their day — meals, medications, appointments, safety, companionship — you are a family caregiver, even if you've never used that word. Legacy exists for exactly this: family members who carry the caregiving role alongside everything else in their lives.
Start by not doing it alone. Connect with other caregivers who understand the journey, learn what to expect in the early stages, and build your support circle before you need it. Our community, support group, and events are a good first step — and they're built for people at every stage, including day one.
No. Legacy provides community, wellness programming, education, and respite — supervised, non-medical activities and caregiver support. We complement your loved one's medical team; we don't replace it. For medical questions, always consult their care providers.
Legacy is a nonprofit and membership is free. Programs like our support group, Memory Socials, and community events are offered at no cost to caregiving families, thanks to our donors and partners.
Small grants that help caregivers pay for the things that keep them well — a massage, a gym membership, a class, a day away. Caregivers apply through Legacy, and awards go toward wellness activities of their choosing. See Wellness Grants for details.
A relaxed, welcoming gathering where your loved one enjoys supervised activities and connection while you connect with other caregivers — together in the same place, each getting what you need. See Memory Socials.
Legacy's approach to caregiver support: partnering with local businesses, organizations, and community spaces to create welcoming environments where caregivers can access support, build relationships, and find trusted resources throughout the community. Learn more on The Sanctuary page.

Three ways: donate to fund respite and wellness for caregiving families, volunteer at our events, or partner with us as a business or organization in the Sanctuary Network. Every bit widens the circle of support.
